Marvel Daredevil | Kinbaku // Recap Review

Matt’s ex-girlfriend, Elektra Natchios, is back in town, Foggy is done with the crazy, and Karen does some digging into the deaths of the Castle family.

Things seemed to be going great for Matt and company, until Elektra Natchios, Matt’s volatile ex-girlfriend pays him a visit by breaking into his apartment. While dancing around the passion they once felt in the past, Elektra asks for help with her dealings with the Roxxon Corporation, a large corporate enterprise who has had shady involvements stretching from the 1940’s to now, as they work with the Yakuza. Matt, visibly agitated by Elektra’s presence, stands by his decision to want nothing to do with her, but something keeps drawing them together. Against his better judgement, he scouts out Elektra’s meeting with Roxxon the next day to find any clue to what secret agenda Elektra has in mind.

Foggy has been holding down the fort at Nelson and Murdock, which is fairly easy these days as D.A. Reyes has all but put them out of business. Her A.D.A., Blake Tower stops by to offer and olive branch by getting Nelson and Murdock out of Reyes crosshairs in exchange for all of the attorney/client information shared from Grotto. As willing as Foggy is to put the Punisher case behind them, he stands by his principles and refuses Tower’s offer without going through the appropriate channels. Knowing that the D.A.’s retribution will be swift, he reaches out to Marci, formerly of Landman and Zach, currently of Hogarth, Chao, and Benowitz. Apparently, the rumors are going around that Reyes plans to launch her political career, first towards the mayor’s office, on the back of the Punisher case, which will set precedence to deal with the upcropping of masked vigilantes in New York City. Jessica Jones, who is affiliated with Marci’s law firm, is already under heavy scrutiny.

The D.A.’s entire handling of the Punisher case has put Karen off and intends to keep digging into the untold story of the Castle family, and turns to Mitchell Ellison, editor of The New York Bulletin and friend of the late Ben Urich. While their last meeting was less than friendly over the accusation of Ellis being in Fisk’s pocket, Ellis is willing to let it go and help Karen find any evidence to push the Castle family story to the front page. She is only able to find a few clues that connects the Castles to a massacre shooting in park, before she has to meet Matt for their date, which would be considered an awkward success, as far as first dates go.

“Kinbaku” contains threads to more shows in the MCU, such as dealing with Roxxon, which was seen in the recently cancelled Agent Carter, as well as Marci’s new firm, run by Jeri Hogarth and affiliated with Jessica Jones. It also begins a new story arc for Elektra Natchios, a skilled fighter, and volatile personality from Matt’s past. Elektra is a source of chaos for a young Matt Murdock that distracts him for a time from his studies at Columbia, but now as both have matured into their own separate lives, chaos quickly erupts for them when Elektra reappears, trying to bring him back into her world of playful danger.
